![We usually do not condone graffiti, but this is really fascinating! This is one of our favorite pieces from our collection!
This is an etched windowpane from 1832, commemorating the birth of a child at the Merchants and Drovers Tavern. It reads: John Wosly [sp?] born October 7th 1832. The top line has one illegible word, then Rahway, then something illegible again. The bottom line reads Tuskegee, Alabama.
One of the amazing parts of our mission is to honor the lives of everyday people whose stories shaped history. We celebrate the resilience, work, and dreams of ordinary individuals across our shared history. This artifact is a perfect example of the work we do.
One can't help but wonder: Who were they? Were they travelers? Were they moving to Rahway? What ever bacame of John? So many questions!
We've had our share of famous people visit the building, yet our mission is shaped by our commitment to develop our site as a museum that preserves and interprets local history in partnership with the community. Our Mission
The mission of the Merchants and Drovers Tavern Museum is to preserve the historic Merchants and Drovers Tavern and Terrill Tavern structures; develop the site as a museum; preserve and interpret local history in partnership with the community; and serve as an educational, cultural, and historic resource.
