Experience the Civil War through the eyes of a slave, a politician, a member of the Wide Awakes, a drummer boy who died in camp, an army chaplain, a carriage manufacturer indicted for treason, Union enlisted soldiers and officers, members of the United States Colored Troops, Confederate soldiers, a physician’s young apprentice, a civic-minded woman and more! 

 

Costumed re-enactors who tell stories of slavery and abolition, Copperhead resistance to the war, the election of Lincoln, military recruitment, local celebrations, encampments and battles, economic ruin at home, a life filled with worry and heartbreak for families, and, finally, the death of Lincoln, Lee’s surrender and the return of soldiers will bring the Civil War period to life on this interactive tour of the historic Rahway Cemetery presented by the Merchants and Drovers Tavern Museum Association.

This program is based on extensive research, including information taken from newspaper accounts, soldiers’ letters and other primary sources.

 

Those planning to attend are advised to come early. Ticket sales will begin at 12:45 each day.  The tour will take about 2 hours to complete, so those who don’t arrive until 4:00 won’t be finished until 6:00 p.m. and may experience delays if the cemetery is crowded. 

 

Parking will be available at Parkside Plaza, located on St. Georges Avenue immediately south of the Merchants and Drovers.  Tour participants will be able to visit the Merchants and Drovers Tavern Museum following the tour.  The Terrill Tavern Museum Shop will be open.
