True Stories of the Civil War period told by those who lived it and who now rest in Rahway Cemetery! Slavery and abolition, Copperhead resistance to the war, the election of Lincoln, military recruitment, local government support of the war, the send-off of troops, encampments and battles, economic ruin in the cities and towns of northeastern New Jersey, worry and heartbreak for families, life in Rahway, and, finally, the death of Lincoln, Lee’s surrender and the return of troops.
COSTUMED RE-ENACTORS STORIES ARE BASED ON EXTENSIVE PRIMARY RESEARCH OF CIVIL WAR ERA DOCUMENTS, LETTERS, NEWSPAPER ARTICLES, PHOTOGRAPHS, BOOKS AND OTHER PUBLICATIONS FROM MAJOR LIBRARIES AND PRIVATE COLLECTIONS, AS WELL AS SIMILAR MATERIAL WRITTEN SHORTLY AFTER THE WAR. A DOCUMENTED SYNOPSIS OF THE RESEARCH WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR SALE.
The Merchants and Drovers Tavern Museum Association is the recipient of a 2005-2006 General Operating Support Grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a Division of the Department of State.
